What kind of router? Most current ones will automatically cross-over if they sense the need.

And, yes, you can connect a cross-over cable to the end of a regular RJ45 cable which effectively makes it one long cross-over cable. (2 C-O cables connected together would effectively become a "regular" cable.)

Rather than buy a cross-over cable, you can buy just a cross-over connector to go at one end of a regular cable.

That's said, it doesn't sound right. I don't have a PlayStation. Perhaps you need to configure the router to forward certain traffic port(s) to the IP assigned to the Playstation?
