I recently read an account of the German attempt to develop the atom bomb. Heisenberg told the Allies after the war that they actually could have done it, but the scientists did not think it was a good idea for the Nazis to have it, so they deliberately delayed, delayed, delayed.

This account has been called into question by a declassified transcript of a taped conversation. Heisenberg did not believe the account of Hiroshima, and thought it was faked, because he grossly overestimated the amount of Uranium 235 necessary to set off the reaction.
