Re:Gini coefficent - For the US some of the apparent inequality could be do to the West and East Coast having much higher prices than the rest of the country, and on a purchasing power parity basis, a little of the inequality would go away. I'm paying $2.25 for regular gas and 3 bedroom 2 bath ranch house are over $500,000 in Silicon Valley. Florida is about $1.80 a gallon and maybe $230,000 for a comparable house.

Inequality has increase greatly since about 1970s.
