Energy shares were among the best performers among the 18 Stoxx 600 industry groups, with the energy index adding 0.5 percent amid optimism rising oil prices will boost the industry's earnings.

BP, Europe's largest oil company, climbed 0.9 percent to 482 pence. Lundin Petroleum AB, a Swedish oil company, gained 4 percent to 44.3 kronor, its ninth straight advance.
