I'm not so sure, although I am certainly no expert on the auto industry. Hybrids could become the "next big thing" to spur car sales, there really isn't much different between a hybrid and a regular car in terms of Detroit. The new hybrid SUV is a ford product.

Detroit already has the hydrogen cars in the lab, are those not competitive with other non hydrocarbon cars from other manufacturers? US cars are awfully competitive now, imho.
