June 1, 2004

Tool steel purchasing began to recover in the middle of last year and 2004 market activity has risen by a strong 28% since the start of the year. Producers, service centers and distributors all are expressing optimism about the market through the end of 2004; so the producing mills are raising transaction prices this summer. Carpenter Technology is seeking a boost in transaction tags of tool and high-speed steels by between 6% and 8% percent, effective with orders booked in June. Crucible Materials is attempting to raise base prices by 5% on conventional high-speed and tool steel products effective with orders placed in June. Universal Stainless & Alloy Products is looking for a 4% increase. Dudley J. Merchant, vice president of sales and marketing at Universal Stainless spoke for the producers when he commented: "These price adjustments are needed to offset continuing increases in energy and manufacturing supply costs."
