When It's Best to Boast - May 31

But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
Galatians 6:14

Jeremiah 9:23-24
At the 1992 Galveston (Texas) County Fair and Rodeo, a twelve-hundred pound steer named Husker was named Grand Champion. He was sold for $13,500 and slaughtered a few days later. When they examined the carcass, veterinarians found evidence of "airing" - the process of injecting air under the hide of a steer to make it appear larger and better formed. Needless to say, Husker's owner lost his trophy and his money.

Boasting about Husker was soon found to be, literally, nothing but hot air. Boasting is an exercise in vanity because the reason for our boast - fame, riches, talent - can disappear in a moment. Our fame can be as short-lived as an inflated steer. There is only one time when it's best to boast, and that is when we boast in God. Paul said that boasting in Christ was the only boast he would dare to make, and he would make that one gladly. When was the last time you boasted about God to someone? There is no shortage of reasons we can be proud of Him, given who He is and what He has done.

The good thing about boasting in God is that the reason for our boast will never change or go away.

Turning Point

Grace puts its hand on the boasting mouth, and shuts it once for all.
