Hawk, that's an excellent proposal, suitable for the Soviet Union and Mao's China where the individual is just a servant of the state and everybody got sent to the countryside for a year or two [or more for those who really were disliked].
<Do two years, and then be put on reserve status, and get on with their lives..
Hell, most of us wasted more than two years of our lives trying to figure out what to do after High School.. We certainly wasted the first two years of college changing majors and partying..
I don't see two years of mandatory service as being that much of a sacrifice.>
If we waste some time or are indecisive, then wasting some more wouldn't matter. Why not serve our whole lives. If two years is good, why not 3 years and really get some public service attitude? That would stop Cassius Clay or Albert Einstein ever reaching their peaks. No Theory of Relativity gets created in the army.
It seems to me that there is a strong bias among most people towards the USSR system where the individual is subsumed in the collective. You might like it but I don't. New Zealand is heading off down that road again.
So, what happens to my freedom in your system? You just force me to your will! What if I object? I suppose you could send me to the Gulag, so get it ready. Or you should get ready for a big fight, or sabotage. Or, like most, I might just resign myself to it and see what trouble I can cause. Be passive and do as little as possible. Play cards, chess and goof off.
