I knew it was tongue in cheek, and I was just pulling your leg.
Downstream from the post you are responding to, upstream from this post, I posted a set of statistics about the Vietnam War. Over the course of 1964-1973, about 2.5 million Americans served in the military in Vietnam, out of a population of about 200 million. Probably less than 1%, actually, due to the fact that the 2.5 served over time. I am not good at explaining mathematical concepts, if Mq reads this he can do a far better job.
15 million men got deferments of one kind or another, which is a far larger number, not to mention the men who were 4F, for real, or just had sympathetic doctors. Given the family connection to the health care profession, I knew of sympathetic doctors, and used to take friends to see them.
If I, or someone I knew, was drafted, and wanted out, but did not know a way out, I would not blame them for being angry.
I just don't know anybody who wanted a way out who did not find it.
Volunteer armies are far better, IMO.
But maybe that's because I believe that some are willing to serve for reasons of their own.
I've done a lot of hard, dirty, dangerous things in my life, but being shot at isn't one of them. |
