Back in the good old days, mothers were considered special, too, especially those of us who gave birth without anesthesia.

These days, of course, "mother" is a dirty word.

I'll make a deal with you. Carry several sons for nine months each, give birth without anesthesia, nurse your children until they are weaned, and give up your gay social life and/or career to stay home with your children, and then we'll compare notes about who is the real hero/heroine.
