Hydrated silicates (clays) form the structural matrix of much interplanetary dust, but in any case it is necessary to postulate an abundance of organic compounds to account for the eventual transition to living cells. There is some evidence, as well as speculation, that specific structures in montmorillonite clays, which absorb aliphatic acids as well as amino acids, are able to replicate when swelled by water.
