Obviously, the fundamentalists in the U.S. aren't in the majority, or we'd probably end our secular form of government altogether. But, they certainly hold a larger amount of political power than their actual numbers indicate they should. They're good at organizing and getting out the vote and pols listen to them. We wouldn't even have an abortion debate in this country if it wasn't for the undue influence religion holds in our society.

I'm just saying that the U.S. is one of most fundementalist countires, not a fundementalist country. People perceive the Middle East as being full of religous zealots, but so our we, more so than most western capitialist democracies. I imagine the Libertarians are weary of the influence the church has on the state. Certainly, some of the most oppressive laws and regimes in mankind's history used religion as their justification. Best to leave religion out of state matters, although religion is so pervasive in the U.S. that it's hard to our government entirely seperated from it, like "In God We Trust" on our money. I can live with that. But, when the church starts telling pols not to accept communion because of their abortion views, I have a problem with that.
