I personally favor the theory that life began at geothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean. The whole earth's environment was more like the vents 4 billion years ago. There is a nice path from that chemistry to the blue-green algae that dominated the world for so long. After oxygen was released the path to genesis could not be taken again.
