EBRD wants Russian companies to be more transparent

RosBusinessConsulting. Thursday, Jun. 3, 2004, 11:28 AM Moscow Time

Russian companies should disclose more information about their owners, Jean Lemierre, the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, declared at a conference devoted to corporate governance and economic growth in Russia. He noted that the EBRD was not confident whether information about the owners of a company were disclosed completely when the bank decided on investments in Russian companies. He also added that there were problems in relations between large shareholders that occupied top positions in a company and other shareholders. Lemierre pointed to the importance of corporate management for Russia saying that it was a key to solving many problems in the country. The improvement of corporate governance will enable companies to increase their capital, attract investors and modernize Russia's economy, he emphasized.
