you could say the same thing about ANY theocratic regime! Iranian ayatollahs too use Islam as a vehicle to advance other, mundane objectives... Hindu nationalists too use Hinduism to maintain Hindu hegemony and the caste system... European Catholics too use religion to deny Turkey EU membership, etc, etc. True, I wouldn't argue with that statement at all. Religion is used in many ways, in many countries, for many ulterior reasons, to further many wider political and strategic objectives. Certainly, muslim countires use religion as a way of keeping their people in line, which is one of the reasons religion plays such a large role in their societies. Religion has been used in places like northern Ireland to keep people under social control and to build local fiefdoms from those who exploit religious differences. The sad reality is that these same time tested methods of social control and furthering ulterior objectives has also used in the U.S., just in a more subtle way for years. Now, under George W. it's becoming a bit more obvious with his War on Terror against the muslim world.
