<<<But I am quite sure there are others, especially yourself, Don, who know a whole lot more about this than I do>>>
FWIW, this was my email response to Ray's questions. As you can see, I probably don't "know" much more than anyone else. The simple fact of the matter is in the absence of a real investigation, there are many aspects of 9/11 that never will be "known". Personally, I believe the cause of independent researchers would be well served by bringing in their own professionals to study the evidence.

I've looked at some of the sites showing missiles apparently going off before the planes hit the towers. As close as I can tell, this is something completely new this year in the way of conspiracy theories. As much time as I've spent looking at clips that have been available over the past several years, it seems like something I, and many others, would have noticed long before now. I have a hard time not suspecting it of being a fake.
I can't remember where I found it, but the second video to turn up of the first plane hitting shows things not visible in the French Fireman video. Both planes appear to have bumps underneath, and there was a white circle on the buildings just before each plane hit. I've seen some speculation the white spots were lasers, but I've wondered if perhaps it was the reflection of the plane's noses in the windows. I really don't know how a person would be able to tell one way or the other.
I recall seeing an article quite awhile back, and I don't think I saved the bookmark, about a Boeing study of the bumps. According to the article, experts spent a week making sure they knew what they were seeing, then declared they wouldn't release their findings as the information was classified. I don't remember why, but I seem to recall having questions about the reliability of the source.
I have long been of the opinion the planes were rigged before they left the ground. I don't think it's necessary to use substitute plane theories to account for the rigging. One plane looks much like any other, and it doesn't strike me as likely many people would make note of minor differences. It's been quite awhile since I've flown, but I really don't remember seeing much of the planes I rode in. Basically you leave the waiting area, then go through a tunnel to your seat. What I'd really be interested in is if any of the passengers had friends who saw them off, and took photos of the planes. It would be nice to see what the planes looked like before they left.
Since I don't know how to fly a plane, I don't know how hard or easy it would be to roll one like the 9/11 flights. I've seen quite a few air shows where the maneuver is pretty much standard stuff. It looks easy enough, but I don't know if it's as easy as it looks. It can't be much more beyond pulling a lever, turning a wheel, or pushing a button. Assuming suicide hijackers were in control, it wouldn't be like they had a lot to lose by experimenting before they hit.
I recall one time roller skating when I was a kid. I took a corner too fast, ended up with a leg in the air in front of me and was frantically waving my arms in back of me to keep from landing on my tail. I saw my life flash before my eyes and to this days I don't have a clue how I pulled out of it. I do recall some kid behind me sneering "Show off!". The moral of the story is just because something may look slick, it isn't necessarily the result of skill.
In the way of pure speculation, I'd probably lean toward the idea someone outside the planes took control of them before they hit, but I don't know how it could be proven. Considering the amount of effort that went into making sure 9/11 happened, it seems to me the mission would not have been left to a pilot who may have gotten cold feet at the moment of truth.
Those are my thoughts on the topic, but as you can see, a lot of it is not substantial. I'll pass it along to Searle.
