You don't get it, there was nothing CLinton could do but release strategic reserves. Guess what? The president has noi power over the oil industry. Almost nada. The Petroleum Institute made up up CEO's like Cheney is supposed to be non-partisan and help the government, but in 2000-2001 they became VERY partisan and deliberately screwed CLinton-Gore-California while deliberately uniting for Bush-Cheney, who in turn turned their cheeks as the energy induistry ripped us off blind. Don't defend the crooks, my friend, or you are on the wrong side.

Also, in 2000 Bush promised to "jawbone" OPEC to keep prices low, citing his experience and clout in the oil industry as a qualification. That promise may have delivered the election. Instead, he's done no jawboning but has stood by while his cronies have boosted prices as much as possible, especially right now.
