TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Morris Chang, chairman of foundry chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., said Thursday (June 3) that the global chip market would grow 30 percent in 2004 and that 2005 also looks set to be a strong year, according to a Associated Press report.

Chang said TSMC would be a technology leader at the 65-nanometer manufacturing process node, the report said. Chang said his company hopes to produce the 65-nanometer technology by late 2006 or early 2007, with 45-nanometer technology following about two years later, the report said.

Chang added that the industry would face challenges as it becomes more oriented towards to portable consumer electronics products, according to the report. Time to market and product life cycles are likely to shorten.

"TSMC plans to broaden its technology offerings," the report quoted Chang as saying. The report did not say where Chang was speaking.
