Interesting.. So we can still wonder why the supervising commanders of those two American units were not aware of one another's presence. The fact that an Afghan scout was with them would not mitigate the lack of situational awareness on the part of the leaders who had tasked both of those patrols, especially from the same company or battalion.

And they should have been using the same SINCGARS radios, although certainly on separate frequencies. However, once engagement was made, there should have been an immediate SPOT report made to the platoons, who then would send it up on the company "push".

That should have alerted the commanding staff, since they should have been monitoring each platoon's "push" that they were engaging one another, given the fact that both patrols came under "hostile" fire simutaneously..

Thus, it sounds like some company and battalion level staffers are trying to cover their butts for having two patrols in such close proximity to one another.
