If pixelated and jumpy is good enough for the millions of Dish Network subscribers, then it's good enough for Charles Tutt!<G>
Seriously, however, I wasn't vouching for the gadget since I have no experience with it. I was just pointing it out as one among many such devices on the market for Windows and Mac. All of my CD/DVD burners have been from Plextor for as long as I can remember, and I certainly do vouch for those...I usually just upgrade as they bring out new ones, sort of like a burner hardware subscription.
If you can't get decent video out of that box, and they can't give you any help, I assume you'll return it. I looked on the web for the Sony box that turns analog video into DV on a firewire which I used several years ago (and which I can vouch for), I think the model number started with MZ something, but I can't find it so far. I think they discontinued that line of separate converter boxes when they started incorporating that feature into most of their DV camcorders. But I'll look some more.
Don't worry, it's doable without resorting to Linux.

Edit: The Sony boxes are discontinued, they were 3 models sold in the US: DVMC-MS1, DVMC-DA1, and DVMC-DA2. I had a DVMC-DA1, and I know for a fact that it worked without a hitch. I found a couple on Ebay, viz:
