Enlightened moderation

Two US lawmakers, Congressmen Steve Chabot (R-Ohio) and
Engel Eliot (D-NY), have praised President General Pervez Musharraf’s vision of enlightened moderation.

In separate meetings, Ambassador Ashraf Jehangir Qazi held with the noted legislators at the Capitol Hill, they praised the singular role being played by Pakistan in the ongoing war against terror. During his recent visit to Islamabad, Congressman Chabot had met President Musharraf. He said: "The policies President Musharraf is pursuing are in the best interest of Pakistan." On the occasion, Ambassador Qazi referred to the article by President Pervez Musharraf appearing in daily ‘The Washington Post’ on Tuesday, in which he propounded the concept of enlightened moderation as imperative for improvement of the condition of Muslim fraternity.

"President Musharraf is the right man at the right time," said Congressman Chabot.

In his remarks, Congressman Engel Eliot praised the article, and said Pakistan lived in, what he described as, "a difficult neighbourhood." He stressed continuation of efforts against terrorism, though acknowledging that approaches on achieving this end may differ. In this behalf, the Pakistan ambassador said, in his article, President Musharraf has laid stress on addressing the root causes of the outstanding disputes.
