Wireless has huge cost advantages in the third world... or do we call it "emerging markets" to be PC now? -g-

It takes a huge amount of capital investment to bring "telephone and cable TV" to areas that don't have it. This takes years to pay back. You might have to connect cell towers with wire or you can uplink them to a satellite or even connect them with microwave links.

The funny thing is I STILL don't own a cell phone. I have DirecTV, DSL, two land phone lines and HBO at my home office and don't feel I need to be connected when I am trying to relax... Plus I think the phone companies are still playing too many games with fees, service quality, etc... so I am waiting for a very reasonably priced, pay as you go plan for the rare time I might want to make a cell phone call away from my home.
