A regular abortion is pretty offputting, too. Only marginally less so than the partial birth version.

I doubt seriously if the "man in the street" has a clue.
The man in the street who doesn't know about this doesn't know because he doesn't care. Sowell's objective is to make the disengaged care. That's a reasonable objective. He should just say so. This business about bias and inserting definitions in to news articles is intellectually dishonest.

The problem with this issue and with this law was not that people who are familiar with the issue are fond of or even indifferent to the procedure. It is unquestionably revolting and no amount of further description will make it more so. The problem with the legislation was that there was no exception for the health of the woman. Borders on depraved indifference in my mind. This legislation was a slam dunk had the woman's health been given sufficient consideration. Describing the procedure on the front page of every newspaper in the country won't make a difference to those who, while they shudder at the thought of the procedure, think that adult women have an interest at least as great as that of the unborn. Ratcheting up the ugliness of the procedure doesn't change that. It's barking up the wrong tree.
