There are many rational practical people in the country but that doesn't mean they're ready to take on the giant responsibility of the #1 job in the world. Also, we learned from GW Bush how bad it can get when you put someone unqualified in that job. As opposed to Bush Sr. for instance. He has made terribly costly mistakes no qualified leader would have. Just look at the difference between how GW and his father handled Iraq. Who knows what Jesse Ventura would do if he got obsessed with something or another.
