I think that oil and gas is really great stuff myself. It would be hard to build an airliner that runs on hydrogen. Also in the energy equation is the billion or more tons of coal that the USA alone burns every year. Only a tiny fraction of that uses clean coal technology. It would be great if we could use fossil fuels more efficiently and conserve them so thay are still available 200 + years from now. Anything that can be done now - wind, solar, hybrid and fuel cell cars and energy efficiency technologies can go a long way towards that goal.
