I believe a timeframe with better returns for AMAT was the 80's.

You are stating the obvious here.

Re: The argument here is buy and hold vs shorter term trading. Which works best? Well that still depends on when an investors buys and sells.

No argument here. However, it is my belief that to sell 9 months into an upturn after a 3 year downturn is foolish, especially when there are no premiums being assigned to the sector. And when the sector is growing at a moderate pace compared with past upturns.
