In my opinion, social control is the name of the game. Control or be controlled. And it's a no holds barred game, too. So, those who are on the top of the pile at the moment do whatever they can to stay there -- lies, bullshit, different political systems, wars, terrorism, revolution, inflation, religion, any kind of trick, you-name-it. Nothing is cast in stone. The whole idea is to keep what you have and, if possible, make some more. You know the nursery rhyme:
