BubbaFred, In my pact with the Outsourcing Marauders, I am peripherally involved in screening 'sweatshops' and vet 'slave drivers'.
The two qualified ones are both located in garden settings, complete with air-conditioning for work and living space. Both companies, by necessity, provide technical training, mostly to workers with only the ability and willingness to learn, improve, and presumably in possession ethical character.
The skilled workers are paid RMB 2,000-3,000 per month, plus social security, pension insurance, and free food. The workers get overtime, and supposedly compete for it.
The equivalent workers in the US costs about 10-13x as much, and most likely do not do overtime.
It turns out that the Chinese facilities are quite well equipped by world standard, and the proprietors used own startup capital for establishment, but also for training overseas. Quite admirable, really.
