They base their decisions in part on how many shares they can get of a stock at a certain price range. If they get a $1,000 bonus they won't consider paying $100 a share for 10 shares of AMAT but they will often pay $25 for 40 shares of AMAT.


I believe the dollar terms for these types of decisions is infintesimally small in proportion the the daily trading of the market. Some people engage in the type of behavior you suggest, yes, but we do not know how many, and never will. I believe it is a small, small fraction of invested money.

You cannot extrapolate the bevavior of a few people in Walmart to the entire market!

PS. Using that logic, stock splits should help AMAT, no?
