DoCoMo flat data rate for 3G

A few days ago, June 1, 2004 DoCoMo's flat rate service for data started. At the moment the flat rate is only for users with pretty high usage volume already, so that the result of the flat rate is a cap on fees for high usage.

I don't expect dramatic effects to happen within a few days, however, long-term the effects of a flat 3G data rate are dramatic - flat rate totally changes the business model.

We often meet companies from Europe coming to Japan with the naive wish to enter into DoCoMo with some kind of revenue share agreement for some kind of content service or game. DoCoMo was never interested in our knowledge in any such revenue share beyond the well known 9% commission on official site subscription.

Now with the flat rate, DoCoMo's income actually does not change whether I download 1 picture or 1 million pictures in one month.

So what is DoCoMo (and AU and Vodafone) doing? Expect carriers move into banking or transactions and other business beyond the pure data pipe. A major step in this direction is DoCoMo's introduction of "wallet phones", to take DoCoMo into the financial transaction space - partially (but not in head-on) in competition with traditional credit cards. For more info on wallet phones see:
