Softbank seems to plan moving into the 3G space in Japan.

Expect turbulent times... Softbank is known to take on the gigantic NTT, so expect Softbank to make impact if it follows up on announcements to enter the 3G markets.

At the moment DoCoMo is No. 1, No. 2 is KDDI/AU, and No. 3 is Vodafone in Japan. In the 3G space there are essentially only two players at this time: No. 1 KDDI/AU and No. 2 is DoCoMo, while Vodafone with about 150,000 users has less than 1% of Japan's 3G market.

For an overview see:
eurotechnology.com
and our recent newsletter entitled "the Softbank shock" (Japan's no. 1 business daily Nikkei called Softbank's recent moves which include the acquisition of Japan Telecom: "the Softbank Shock")

I would not be surprised if Softbank relegates Vodafone to the fourth position in Japan... will be interesting to watch Softbank enter the market. Consumers will probably benefit a lot, as they have in the domestib BroadBand market.

Greetings from Tokyo,
