More talk on the weekend about the tax question and whether the government is losing because of trusts. Well of course they are losing. We buy trusts because they are tax advantaged, which means the government is disadvantaged, end of story. But all taxation is arbitrary. I was reminded by the replays of Reagan's spoof of the ideal, simple tax system in two lines. "One, declare your income. Two, send it in." Anything we don't have to send in is because they are being nice to us. I hope no-one here is consumed by guilt owning trusts.
