But I think Washington is completely out to lunch in the 21st century, what, with a 25% decrease enrollment in engineering which is really the future source of a country's security, meanwhile sports players are honored more than engineers in our society.

That has little to do with Washington. The government isn't paying the sports players or the majority of engineers. Its more a function of the fact that you can't get billions of dollars for the TV rights to watch a few thousand engineers work. Another reason is that there are far fewer professional sports players then engineers so the money that goes to the people in each field is not as spread out in sports as it is for all engineering disciplines.
