Well, version number two was the justification for our huge sacrifice in Vietnam.

Lots of things where used as justifications. If I make a statement about how the war in Iraq was justified because we need to stop Saddam before he could ally himself with Sauron and the forces of Mordor then that would be a "justification", even if it would be a rather insane one. Most people who supported the war in Vietnam did not think the the whole world would go communist if we didn't fight Vietnam, or if we pulled out after the fighting started. Many of them probably thought something worse then the 1st version of the domino theory that I mentioned, (or in other words worse then what really happened), but few seriously thought that the American soldiers in Vietnam were the only thing that was keeping communism from sweeping the world.
