Perhaps Reagan's incredibly lopsided victories in 1980 and 1984 had something to do with the "myth".

1980 Popular Vote 50.7% Reagan 41.0% Carter 6.6% Anderson
  Electoral Vote 489 Reagan 19 Carter 0 Anderson

That was nothing. One could suppose that Anderson had something to do with Carter's poor showing. But in 1984, with no third party candidate, Reagan did even better and Mondale, much more likeable than the priggish Carter, did no better.

  Electoral Vote 525 Reagan 13 Mondale
