I can't speak for Softbank, but my guess is that they'll become a full telecom provider using IP telephony including 3G, and take on the established incumbents. Why should they restrict themselves to ADSL? Masayoshi Son does not have a history of being shy. They are going for a full 3G license.

Since DoCoMo is No. 1, KDDI/AU is No. 2, Vodafone is No. 3, and Softbank is No. 4 in the telecoms pecking order in Japan, it's obvious that Softbank will first target to overtake Vodafone, and relegate Vodafone to place 4. It will be interesting to see what happens, because Vodafone overall has a lot of cash, so the question is: will they use the cash to fight with Softbank, will there be mergers? What will UK institutional shareholders think about a battle with Softbank in Japan etc. Very interesting...
