Hi Malcolm - Newest National Geographic has Colin Campbell predicting a peak in 2012, USGS predicting 2040. Article has only some substance, lots of pictures.

My view right now is the world will have a flat, broad peak, not a narrow peak. This will make it hard to separate signal from noise until a number of years pass - maybe a decade or two.

One good thing is the oil peak is moving to the top ten items on most people's agenda world wide. R&D for conservation, exploration, and alternatives will follow.

Looking at examples like the Montreal Protocol (florocarbons and ozone), elimintion of small pox, building of the web, I expect that the human race will address the oil problem with some degree of success...
