what is the evidence that that is the common interpretation?

It's not, unfortunately. There are many violent muslims.

To be fair, though, there are many materialistic Christians who are also hypocrites. In the bible belt, there are Christian churches everywhere. The biggest ones have large congregations. And, as I have learned from AF who is considering seminary, some of the popular preachers at the big churches make $100-$250K per year. In rural areas, you are rich if you make $50K annually. Those salary numbers blew my mind. I had no idea that someone could even consider allowing themselves to be paid that much money to preach a religion that advocates the abandonment of material wealth, camel through a needle's eye, etc. Maybe some of them are giving it all away, but I doubt it. The "rising stars" among church pastors focus on moving up to a bigger congregation to make more money. They move to a bigger church every few years. It reminds me of pro athletes and free agency.

These examples are not the norm. Most midwest preachers have small congregations. They stay in one church for a long time, and they get paid very little.

But there are always hypocrites.
