Several of them died, though. It is sad, regardless of politics.

The official said eight of the deaths have been "classified by medical authorities as murders".

Another eight Iraqi of the 32 prisoner deaths had been classified as justifiable homicides, the official added.

Seven of these occurred at Abu Ghraib - the Baghdad prison at the centre of the current abuse scandal - and one at another facility in Iraq.

Among the eight homicide cases still being investigated is that of former Iraqi Army General Abed Hamed Mowhoush who once headed ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's air defences.

He died on November 26, 2003, while being interrogated in the town of Qaim northwest of Baghdad.

The US military said at the time he died of natural causes after complaining that "he didn't feel well and subsequently lost consciousness."

But an autopsy released by the Pentagon on Friday said Mowhoush, who was found in a sleeping bag, died of "asphyxia due to smothering and chest compression."

The Pentagon released 22 other autopsies of prisoners, with causes of death including "multiple gunshot wounds," "strangulation," "blunt force injuries and asphyxia," but also some natural causes.

The official did not give details on when final findings on these deaths would be made by Army criminal investigators.
