The use of real estate as a metaphor is not new. In fact there is some use of the term in law that assigns property status to spectrum, I believe, in the sense that the carriers (who collectively almost universally entered the great hall of Chapter 11 when they got caught up in) purchasing huge chunks of the stuff, during the cellular spectrum auctions. I'll be damned if I lay down five billion dollars for this so-called piece of virtual property and someone tells me that it's not my property to have. But that is a burlesque show for another discussion, I suppose.
