Republican ascendency

The long terms trends in America do not favor Republicans. One such trend is the rapidly increasing income inequality, with the ones at the bottom increasing much faster than the ones at the top. Another is the reversal of increasing wealth for seniors due to escalating medical costs and the steady disappearance of traditional pensions. When the boomers start retiring in large numbers, Republicans better watch out -- the boomers vote, unlike most of the poor.

Of course, Republicans can still save the day by coopting Democratic social programs -- like Bush is trying to do.
