3G take up in UK very encouraging
June 9, 2004

3G take up and usage in UK is very encouraging observes The 3G Portal.

A year has passed since 3's launch of next generation services in the UK while there has been the more recent emergence of 3G services targetting business people in a couple of major cities from Vodafone and T-Mobile. Already a significant uplift in penetration of 3G services has been seen since the start of this year according to the release of a quarterly survey of mobile usage commissioned by mobile marketing firm Enpocket.

Penetration of 3G (UMTS) has risen in the last 3 months from around 1% to approaching 3% of the population.

Other reported findings also augur well for the more sophisticated services expected on 3G when Enpocket reported that mobile owners are getting to grips with the more advanced features on handsets beyond SMS.

Also usage of the more complex services found on 3G handsets is growing towards 40%. The 3G Portal observes that this is already higher than at the same stage in the life cycle of the 1st wave of data-enabled handsets in the late 1990's.

The fact that people are prepared to spend money and time downloading content to their mobiles is great news for 3G mobile firms.
