If we're not close yet, as you say, we should still know what our goals are and at least generally how we will know when we reach them.

I think we're there now. Close enough to at least be setting a date for the cutover. We have a critical mass of TV shows with mixed race couples. We have only money as an obstacle for qualified blacks to get into schools or clubs or whatever it takes to move up. Hardly anyone gives a damn what color anyone is anymore plus mixing has reached the point where race labeling is on the verge of silliness and has started to be protested in census and other areas. We still have some red-lining. We still have impact from the handicaps of culture and violence. It ain't quite there yet. But it's close enough by my criteria to address remaining factors directly, not via race, which is sufficiently condescending to be borderline racist itself and a half-assed proxy to boot. Seems to me we've been doing what we've been doing long enough now to have at least some general measures of success. If we don't, then we're operating on inertia and that's good enough only for true believers.
