Sam--Re: Isolationism-

Altho I am against isolationism, it did seem that the protectionist policies of post-war Japan allowed their auto and electronic industries to grow.

Japan was fiercely protective, and argued that importing American rice would destroy a "spiritual" agricultural enterprise. Meanwhile, cars were as spiritual to Americans as rice was to Japan. While I was there in '75, an American was put in jail for importing whiskey, which he was selling for half the Japanese price.

For a while, I thought we would turn into an agricultural country. Motorola, and then others fought back by making better products.

However, American consumers benefitted by getting cars with better quality control and extraordinary electronics.
