I keep meaning to check Kareem Abdul Jabbar's book out of the library.

The one about the tank unit. I have seen him on Book TV doing an interview. His Father, I think, was a WWII soldier. I found the article though "Booker rising," an excellent blog by a black libertarian.

I suspect that Kareem's outlook has changed the days when he changed his name.
