You seem to think the poor are poor because of their culture; I think the poor are poor because of racial discrimination, because of the social class structure of American society, and, oh by the way, some cultural impediments.
I do think that. I used to think what you think because it was true when I used to think it. Now that discrimination has abated dramatically, meaning that middle class black kids are not handicapped in our society, the bulk of the remaining problem is cultural and financial. Continuing to address it as primarily racial will not be effective.
Do you have a problem with those goals?
I am a huge advocate of diversity. I love the color and texture of society and find differences an asset, in the main. I applied myself diligently to fostering diversity in the workplace during my career, diversity of skill sets and experiences for the most part.
If by "diversity," however, you mean racial quotas, for which a perfectly good word has been co-opted as a euphemism, then, yes, I have a problem with that. |
