To the extent that you are determining if a company is big by its stock its market cap not shares outstanding that you have to worry about. It is harder for a very large company in terms of market cap to have sustained rapid gains. (OTOH a large company is normally less likely to go to $0, and it probably did something right to get as big as it is).
