I think you mean: the French politicians... not 'the French'.

Still, the politicians were probably trying at almost all costs to avoid a war... because of a very unpleasant reality for them: they had lost nearly an entire generation of young men in WW I fighting the Germans, and, all for next to nothing.

Even with us losing WAY LESS percentage-wise in WW I then the French did... it STILL took a Pearl Harbor attack to get us into WW II, our people were that against another foreign war.
