Yes, following what was written on your heart instead of what was written on theirs would give you a moral leg up, I suppose. You ought not to get caught, though, when you plot such mischief...but you were probably too impatient to exercise the requisite caution.

I'm sure the sin was only venial and will not affect future prospects...
