I'm not so sure that this is correct. While I share your concerns about skyrocketing medical costs, the longevity of the US population supposedly continually increases. This is probably due mainly to advances in medical technology. This suggests improvement rather than decline in living standards, although longevity is not necessarily a proxy for quality of life.
